The International Handball Federation (IHF) is an international association of six confederations. The term International refers to any country that is involved in this sport. The IHF was founded in 1946 by representatives of eight national federations. The organization has grown into a multi-faceted, international organization with many facets.
The IHF defines its purpose as "lead, develop and promote handball around the world." This definition seems simple enough, but the IHF also clarifies that they aim "to unite all the players of the game who have taken a common interest in the game and who wish to play a clean and fair game without any infringement of any rules." In order to achieve these goals, the IHF holds regular-season tournaments throughout the world, as well as an international tournament at the Olympic Games.
The IHF is very strict in sports regulation. All players are required to have competitive eligibility, as well as a clean record of playing. Additionally, all IHF teams are required to have a properly certified doctor who will be present on-site at all games.
